A II USBAND’S CRIME.
AUCKLAND, October 7
A sensational crime is reported from Allriston. near Alanm-owa., about 17 miles from Auckland. It occurred early this morning, and as a sequal to it. John Arnold, aged 42. a Tann worker, lias been arrested on a charge oi having attempted to murder his wife, Freda Arnold .aged 33. It is stated that, after having entertained a party at the house, the husband picked a .quarrel with his wife in her bedroom. Finally attacking her with a stick and a tray. He then bound her by the ankles and wrists to a bed post. She collapsed, and Arnold said:—“Now you’re dead, I’ll fire the house.” In addition to beating her about the head Arnold is alleged to have thrust his fingers down her .throat, and tried to strangle her, tearing and scratching the inside of her throat. There were six children in the house, who escaped. Airs Arnold recovered in time to free herself from being burned. The house was totally destroyed with its contents. .Mrs Arnold’s father, Air Hansch, was in the house and was awakened by his daughter’s screams. Ho tried to outer the room, hut was struck on the head with a stick by Arnold who bolted the door against him. Hansch ran for assistance. By the time he returned, the fire was too fierce to allow of an entrance being made. - Arnold was arrested to-day after a. search of the district. Mrs Arnold is in a low condition this evening. DB AFT 187 . AUCKLAND, Oct. 7. The returned men here benefited considerably by the voyage, and there were no cot eases. During the trip classes of instruction were held. Two hour lessons daily wmv> given on four educational and twelve vocational subjects. Of the latter, by far the greater number of men chose farming. The educational subjects included commerce, economics, English history and other general knowledge. The experiment is considered a success. It is intended to give similar classes on all homewardhound transports. Owing to the presence of returned men in draft 187 all the hotels within a radius of fifteen miles of the chief post office wore closed to-day.

WATERED ATILK. WANOANRUL October 7. “This is a record case. I have not /had hue, or heard one. like it. I have had one in Auckland of 27 or 28, but forty two per cent, of added, water?” This was Air Wyvcrn Wilson, S.Ar.’s remark at the conclusion of a ease here in which a local dairy farmer in a small way was charged under the Food and Drugs Act. with selling adulterated milk an official analysis of which showed 42 per cent of added water. The defendant. Ailexainer Guthrie, could not explain how it happened. He was in the habit of selling Iris milk to a vendor, the amount sold being about four gallons a day. He was fined £2O, ith £2 witnesses’ expenses, and costs 9s.

John Albort Potter pleaded guilty to attempting to export postage stamps from New ( Zealand to a neutral country, Switzer j land, without the consent of the Min ister -of Customs. It was stated by : Mr ■Gifford Marsall (Crown Prosecutor! that defendant had previously applied for a permit but was refused. He . then attempted to export stamps by j sending them to an agent in Australia, i for postage to Switzerland. I Mr Wilson. S.M., pointed out that the minimum fine was £2o. He thought ( the case called for more than this, as . the defendant had flouted tfie regula- , lions. He lined him £3O. and he was ordered to pay costs of £3 10s. I CHINESE FINED. j AUCKLAND. 7)ct, 7. I Two Chinamen were fined £IOO each hero to-day on charges of assisting in the management of a gaming house. , One other was fined £2d on the same charge.
