The Czechs, co-operating with the now Russian forces, attacked the Germans and Bolsheviks northward of the railway on the left bank of the Volga, and after hard lighting, they captured the villages of I'rih and fvanovka. Their advance continues. FAMOUS IMAGE STOLEN. LONDON, September 30. Advices from Moscow state that during a service a robber snatched the world famed image of Our Lady of Kazan, covered with jewels of fabulous value, from a priest, whom lie shot with a revolver and severely wounded. Tho robber escaped with the booty. REIGN OF TERROR. NEW YORK, Sen. 30. The reign of terror in Russia has, it is reported, led to 1700 persons, mostly former army officers being held as hostages for the lives of Bolshevik officials. About; 1,946 Englishmen arc imprisoned in the Fortress of St. Peter and Saint Raul at Pctrograd. This is on the pretence that they are implicated in the plot which resulted in the killing of Unstaky, (chief of the police). There are twenty French citizens in tho same prison, the conditions in which could not be worse. Prisoners are crowded in groups of fifteen or twenty, in small damp cells, only two or three arc able to lie dmvn at the same time. They are not permitted exercise, a have no bedding, and practically no food. Forty-four Czeelio-Slovaks who have been captured were found imprisoned and starving to death. Twen-ty-nine are still imprisoned, but fifteen lnwo been removed to an hospital in „ dying state.
