The reign of terror in Russia has, it is reported, led to 1700 persons, mostly former army officers being held as hostages for the lives of Bolshevik officials. About; 1,946 Englishmen arc imprisoned in the Fortress of St. Peter and Saint Raul at Pctrograd. This is on the pretence that they are implicated in the plot which resulted in the killing of Unstaky, (chief of the police). There are twenty French citizens in tho same prison, the conditions in which could not be worse. Prisoners are crowded in groups of fifteen or twenty, in small damp cells, only two or three arc able to lie dmvn at the same time. They are not permitted exercise, a have no bedding, and practically no food. Forty-four Czeelio-Slovaks who have been captured were found imprisoned and starving to death. Twen-ty-nine are still imprisoned, but fifteen lnwo been removed to an hospital in „ dying state.
