PATRIOTIC COMPETITIONS

OPENING DAY. Punctually at 19 o’clock this morning tho Patriotic Competitions opened : with the preliminary tests, in the dancing section. The following were the classes disposed of:— Highland fling, (costume) 12 years and under. There were several competitors and the following were recalled for to-night. Misses E. McNinn, (Grey mouth), E. Ruth von AL Gibbons, 1 . Maunder and F. McKenzie, (Grevmouth). Highland Fling (costume) over 12 years. The recalls were, Misses L. McIntosh, H .King, M. Dawson ,and Master G. Inglis. is word Dance (costume,; 12 years and under. The recalls for to-night are: Misses M. E. King, M. Gibbons, ami F. MacKenzie, (Greymouth). Sword Dance, (costume) over 12 years The recalls arc: Misses N. Dawson, L. Mclntosh, M. Duncan and Mastor Inglis. x _ Sailor’s Hornpipe (costume) 12 years and under. Recalls. M. Gibbons, and M. Maunder. ’ Sailor’s hornpipe, (costume,) over 1vears. Recalls: N. Dawson, M. Duncan, G. Inglis. The first iKirtion of the elocutionarj section was taken in the afternoon. Mr. 11. MacDonald, of Fairho is tho judge of the dancing, and Mr. J. 1* ■ Wilson of the elocution. The Ridges will announce tho results of the contests to-night, and give remarks on the performances. The competitions tonight begin at 7.45 o’clock.
