The United Press reports: Berlin announces that the evacuation of St Mihiel salient had been begun somo days before the American offensive began. A German wireless official report states: In anticipation of an attack the evacuation of the St Mihiel salient, which had long been under consideration. was commenced a few days ago. The French advanced to the heights eastward of Maas, but were repulsed. We temporarily lost Comb res Height, but it has been recaptured by the Land wehr. Austro-Hungarian forces, southward of C’ombros, by strong resistance, assured the retreat of our divisions at St Mihiel. The enemy has gained ground at Thiaucourt. . The evacuation of the, salient was completed at night and was not disturbed.
