* A northern paper says that a hig field of coal has been located on the State mine reserve at Point Elizabeth. The quality is something. between a lignite and a brown coal. Out crops have been observed indicating the presence of the black diamonds, but it, was only recently that the extent was known. If.ad the field been thoroughly prospected before coal mining was entered upon, the railway would probably have been carried along the coast instead of making a diversion inland and have enabled the whole field to be worked more cheaply. A resident of Hokitika who some timo ago sent to a Soldier lad in France some hooks of Y.M.C.A. coupons, obtained from tho Post Office, was greatly pleased on receiving theso words in acknowledgement:—“Many thanks for the coupons forwarded. This is a splendid arrangement Im3tween tho N.Z. people and the Y.M.C.A. authorities. Unlike E.P. canteens the Y.M.C.A.’s are most reasonable in the prices they charge for their goods. They do not carry such a variety of stuff as do the E.F. canteens .hut a New Zealander knows they are there for his benefit, and whatever profits may accumulate will ultimately be spent in “bneksbee’’ for the boys. I know of no other Y.M.O.A than our own N.Z. one, which dispenses tea or cocoa and biscuits free of charge to the men. And T have heard many a Tommy, tired and sometimes “fed-up” speak ' gratefully of their treatment at our Y.M.C.A.” Evidence such as that should encourage local people to forward to Franco books of these coupons whenever they can, Delays are dangerous with colds and influenza.
