HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FRIDAY AUGUST, 9th. The Council met at 8 p.m. Present— Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor), Wood Me Gregor, Preston, King, Thompson, Stapleton and Parkhill. The minutes of the previous meeting wore read and confirmed and correspondence outward approved. MOTION OF SYMPATHY. Tho Mayor moved that the Council convey its sympathy to Cr Blank on the recent loss of his father. Seconded by Mr King and carried in silence. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From D. J. Evans, thanking Council for letter of sympathy.—Received, j From Mrs Camming, thanking Council for letter of sympathy.—Received j From Department of Internal Affairs ! in reference to dangerous goods.—Re-
ceived ; referred to Inspector to report. From Gisborne Borough Council forwarding copy of resolution for internment of all enemy aliens, and asking for support of Council.—Received; the Mayor suggested that- no action be taken. Mr Preston was in favour of all being interned, without any exceptions. Mr McGregor moved that- consideration bo deferred to next meeting. He felt that some action should be taken. Mr King seconded the motion. They send one business man to the front, while an alien was allowed to continue his business and profit by the departure of his opponent for the front. If they conscripted one man then they should conscript the others who benefited.
j Mr Preston moved an amendment that this Council was in strong support | of tho letter and favoured internment jof every alien person. Lapsed for want j of a seconder. J The Mayor said he did not wish to 1 put himself in opposition to the motion, but he felt that the letter went too far altogether. He thought the wording of j the lelter was unreasonable, j The motion to hold over consideration, was agreed to. From Canterbury Education Board thanking Council for contribution to the technical class of engineering in Grey-mouth.—-Received. From Paterson Michel and Co., asking that, the water meter be removed and that a yearly charge be made.—Received;.and fee fixed at £2-/10/- per annum. From Department of Internal Affairs, asking for particulars of memorials erected to French people.—Received, From J. T. Myers, applying for annual holiday of two weeks.—Received and request granted.
REPORTS. , jFrom Treasurer reporting receipts £llO/11/9; payments £GO2/14/8, credit balance £236/7/10. —Received. Accounts amounting to £2ll/19/1 wore passed for payment. OVERSEER’S REPORT. I beg to submit tho following report on work done during the past month. : Boaley Street drain.—-Two sections of this drain collapsed during the recent wet weather. Both of these sections have been renewed. As a number of the streets in the Borough were showing signs of woar we took advantage of the fine weather during the month to put most of them in order. We put in two chains of twelve inch concrete pipes for the road crossing at the intersection of Rolleston and Hampden Streets. We renewed a culvert on the South Hokitika road. A number of watertables in various streets were cleaned out.
We made 180 feet of 12 and 18 ineb concrete pipes during the month. The usual maintenance works in the Borough have also been attended to. The reservoir was tested during the month and found to be leaking very badly. On a depth of S feet- of water the loss in 2J hours was over 21 feet-. It will therefore be necessary to effect repairs to the structure as soon as possible. The contract for the supply of gravel for the past year is now up and it will be necessary for the Council to call tenders for the supply of gravel for the ensuing twelve months:—Received. Mr Thompson moved that the Council as a whole visit the reservoir when the Overseer had it ready for inspection. The Manager of the Abattoirs reported that, during July there were examined 11 cows, 77bullocks, 219 sheep, 59 lambs, 9 pigs, 6 calves. There were condemned 1 cow and 1 bullock. Fees for the month £56/2/-. The Council rose at 8.30. p.m.
