FROM GENERAL MAURICE.
THHfOI'B OF SUCCESS OF MOVE
[per TRUSS ASSOCIATION. —COPYRIGHT.]
{Received This Dn.v at 9.30. a.m.) LONDON, August 9. General Maurice tributes the newest Tanks work southward of the Somme ■where they recently had a dress rehearsal. The enemy are alert northward of the Somine, and in the neighbourhood of Moreuol, consequently the ’ progress was less there than in the centre, but the centre progress was most important. The enemy in Mont Didier are t ready in a pronounced salient. The advance eastward of Villers Brettonneux made the - main position very uneomfortablo. Already Amiens is out of range of all except the longest guns. More important still, we are giving him no respite and are keeping him on the defensive while getting up our heavies on the Voslc. It is premature to say definitely that we have won back the initiative, but we should if the battle develops as it promises. General Haig’s success is due to a surprise, consisting of a secret . concentration and a short intense bombardment and the launch of a formidable Tank attack.
