THE ENEMY RETREAT
masterly AND EFFECTIVE
(Received this day at 1.5 p.m.) LONDON, July 20
The enemy retreat continues along the lino of the Ourcq. The French are now on tho north flank and further to the east have secured practically the whole road between Rheims and Dormans.
The enemy rearguards are resisting very strongly .especially in the very wooden country between the Ardrc* and the Vamoigno, a tributary of tho Marne. ■So far they have succeeded in checking, hut not stopping tho French advance.
Americans between Fere en Tardenois and tho source of the Ourcq, are pressing on closely, and vigorously. Generally- speaking, the advance between noon on Sunday and Sunday night on fl twenty miles front, is two to three miles in depth. The enemy have now abandoned tire line along the Ourcq, whore it was thought, he might make a stand.
Tliero is, little doubt now but that h© will take up a line behind the Vesle, occupying a straight line from Soissons [to Rheims, which is probably well entrenched and very strong, with rearguard communications. All the villages between Soissons, and Bazoches ar© afire. The enemy is burning them as a preliminary to a further retreat.
The enemy’s new lino will ho extended ,to threaten Rheims from th© northern outskirts.
Tliere has been heavy fighting in the neighbourhood of Buzancy. ' The enemy’s retirement is being made in good order, as is emphasised by our only prisonering one hundred arid captuirng four guns.
