TUNNEL CONNECTION MADE News was received on Saturday stating that the Arthur’s Pass tujinel headings had been broken through, making the connection between Hhc Last and West Coasts. ft PIERCED. CHRIST! HURCH, July 20. Advices from Otirti state the Otira Tunnel was pierced this morning with an iron road, eleven feet in length. THE OFFICIAL CEREMONY. FIXED KOI! AUGUST 21st. ‘ The .Mayor of Christchurch-(Mr. 11. Holland), who is also president of the Arthur’s Pass Tunnel League, on Friday received a letter from the Minister of Public Works (Sir William Fraser) suggesting Wednesday, August 21st, as *a suitable date upon which to hold the official ceremony in connection with the meeting of the headings in the Arthur’s Pass tunnel. The Minister stated that by the date mentioned it was certain that the headings' would have met, and it would also avoid clash ing with the Grand National fixture. The Mayor intends replying that the dace suggested will he suitable. .Mr. Holland has received an offer from the Lyttelton .Marine Band of its services in connexion with the ceremony. Further arrangements in connexion with the ceremony trill be made as the date upm which it is to he held draws nearer.
