[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. —COPYRIGHT.] LONDON, July 8. The courtmartial of .Dowling, cabled
on June 10th, has opened. Ho is cliarged that, while a prisoner of war at Limburglahn Camp, he voluntarily serv-
ed in the Irish Brigade, formed aim
maintained by the German Government, also with endeavouring to persuade other prisoners to join. Finally ho took a certain course with the enemy Uavai forces and landed in Ireland. Mr Bodkin, K.C., was the prosecuting counsed. He said that the prisoner was in 1907 transferred from he Connaught Rangers to the Reserve. He was called up, however at the outbreak of war. He accompanied t««» original British Expeditionary Force to France, but was taken prisoner. The Germans planned to concentrate the Irish prisoners at Limherglahn, 2000 being there at the end of December, 1914. They were well-treated. Tho prisoner (Dowling) and three others, (Quinless, Keogh, and Bailey;, stood out prominent from among the other Irish prisoners. Quinless, Keogh, and Dowling seemed to be acting together with Casement. Counsel said the prisoner had explained that he' was washed ashore from a torpedoed vessel. On landing Dowling went to the Bank and changed thirty one pounds in silver into Irish notes. Counsel added that there was little doubt that Dowling had been allowed to come over to participate in an armed rebellion in Ireland.
THE. TRIAL CONTINUED. (Received this da*v at 12.30 fl.ni.) LONDON, July 8. Dowling is a slight pale-faced youth in civilian clothes. He is attended by a guard with a loaded revolver. Accused seemed very nervous. Tlio first witneeess was Croning, a returned prisoner from Germany, who described Dotfling’s activities to get men to join the Irish Brigade. He wore ■the so-called Irish uniform with Shamrock badges. On one occasion British prisoners set on Dowling, and called him a traitor.
