WELCOME HOME.
There was a very large attendance at the Public Hall, Kanieri, last night when a welcome home social was tendered to Private A. Vroblfski, who returnj ed by a recent transport on duty. This ; young man left with the Main Body, having enlisted at Hokitika on the outbreak of the war in August, 1911. He has been wounded twice, tho last occasion at tho Battle of Messines. He is duo to return to duty early next j month. The Vroblfski family of ArI thurstown sent two other sons, both | of whom fell in the service of their ' country—one at .Gallipoli, and the other in Franco. The family has done its duty right well, and the large gather- ; ing last night was an honour to Mr and Mi’s Vroblfski, well-earned. Among .those present was tho Mayor of Hokitika (Mr Perry) Lieut. Frickleton V.C ! and the members of bis family, as well :ns several returned men and soldiers ;on leave.. Mr R. Wells, M.C.C., was | the Chairman of the gathering and oar- ! ried through tho duties in a genial manner. The large floor space of the comfortable hall, was crowded with dancers, excellent music being supplied by Mr and Mrs McFadyen. Several excellent’ songs were rendered by local residents and the visitors, and won heartily applauded, a Scotch duet in particular, pleasing the audience immensely. The Chairman, Mr Perry and Mr Evans spoke, during the evening eulogising the services of their guest and congratulating the district on the patriotic spirit shown from the outbreak of the war. Reference was made also to the presence of Mrs Frickleton and bet fighting family, and to the other notable examples of the district where whole families of sons had gone off to the war at the call of duty. Mr Well*expressed thanks on behalf of Private Vroblfski, who was grateful for tlx honour done him. The proceedings were of a very hearty nature, and went with a merry swing which gave en-joyment-to all. Tlie ladies of Kanieri served a generous supper at a suitable interval, and the visitors found themselves well cared for at every turn Tho function was kept up with great zest till an early hour and proved one of the most successful socials of the many record events to the credit of the town of Kanieri.
