MOTOR. CAR FATALITY. PALMERSTON NORTH, June 28 ! H'toc Shannon residents, Tremowan, MeKegg and King, were, motoring through the Manawatu Gorge last night alien the car ran into a slip on the road and went over the bank. King ami MeKegg jumped clear before the car went over, but Tremowan apparently was unable to extricate himself and was carried over the side into the river. It is not known for certain whether he was carried down the river, or pinned under the car. Dragging operations are in progress. Tremewau was a well j known resident of Shannon.

Turnbull made a hobby of collecting books and documents bearing on New Zealand and he is believed to have the finest collection of the kind in existence. He has bequeathed It to the King to constitute a reference lihi aiy for Wellington. The conditions are left to the Government, which is asked to take the British Museum and Mitchell Library, of Sydney, as a guide. In order to house the. collection, Mr. Turnbull recently built a brick residence half of which is taken up with the . Library. DIPTHERIA. WELLINGTON June 27. Official figures relating to the diphtheria cases report to the Health Department indicate that the epidemic is abating in the Wellington district, the figures for the last six weeks being: May 20th 02 cases; May 27th, 108; Juno 4th, 07; June 10th, 08; June 17th 83; June 24th, 75.
