As a result of the bridging of the south rivers privately owned motor-ears are beginning to make their appearance in South Westland. The first local car for Hari llari has now gone south. Then the ‘‘Kid from Timnru” film, with Mr. Barrie Marshall on the stage, reciting the poem, gave decided pleasure. Then followed the star drama “A Self Made Widow,” a presentation of decided interest, with great dressing effects. The death took place yesterday at Palmerston North of Mr William O’Con nor, second son of the late Maurice O’Connor, a well-known West Coaster. Deceased was married to a daughter of the late J. M’Guire of Reefton. Deceased was a native of Greymouth, and followed agricultural pursuits. The members of the Municipal band are requested to meet at tlie Pioneer Memorial to-night at 7.30 o’clock, to take part in the Kauicri social dance. Iho deceased, who was widely known in the -district, for 11 past followed her profession of maternity nurse. About sixweeks ago,- she took severely ilk and the gravity of the illness was at once recognised, In spite of all that careful nursing and skilled medical attention could do. she gradually sank and passed peacefully away. Md. “Phil” Mead, well known on the Keefton-Westport Road, died at the Reefton hospital on Tuesday night. On election day bo met with a motor accident ami was taken to the hospital, bis condition causing bis relatives much anxiety. He appeared to rally until Sunday last, when a change set in, and no hopes were held for a recovery. The deceased was a native of Nelson, being a son of Mr Hubert -Mead, of Motupiko. and was one of a family of 13 children, one brother making the supreme sacrifive oil Gallipoli.
Lieut. Frickleton V. C-, and party, had a very interesting visit to the Westland Hospital yesterday afternoon. The Chairman and members of the Hospital Board present and tho staff, did all in their power to entertain the distinguished visitor and his relatives. Lieut. Frickleton met practically all the patients with whom he chatted freely. Before leaving the promises Lieut. Frickleton expressed his thanks to those who had so kindllv shown him over the institution, and to -Mr. Breexc. (Chairman) expressed cordial thanks for the kindly welcome extended. The party, owing to news coming of the arrival of Mrs Fricldeton’s fourth son at Greymouth last night, returned north by the evening train. They were seen off by the Mayor and others, hearty cheers being given for the Frickleton family. During the visitors say in town Messrs 0. M. Malfroy, (President of the. Automobile Association). Gooch, and Dowell Bros, placed their ears at the disposal of Lieut. Frickleton and party, a courtesy that was much appreciated by the visitors and the authorities.
