I [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. —COPYRIGHT.] AMERICAN SHIP SUNK. WASHINGTON June 1. The Navy Departcnt announced that the American transport President Lincoln, homewnrd bound was torpedoed and sunk.
U-BOAT RAIDS. ON AMERICAN SHIPS. EASTERN PORTS CLOSED. (Received This Dav at 9.30. a.m.) NEW YORK, June 3. One steamer and several smaller c;raft were sunk off the Jersey coast by G<‘i man submarines. The ships were attacked during the night. The going out of ships has been stopped. It is believed half a dozen vessels have been sunk. Eastern ports are closed, and there are no sailings. The crews of several crati were rescued and landed. Two U-boats were seen.
FIFTEEN STEAMERS SUNK. _ LATER. Fifteen vessels, have been submarined. TOLL OF U-BOATS. ROME, June 1. An Italian naval officer states that owing to the success of anti-submarine measures, no Austrian submarines are now encountered. If the Entente published the figures, it would astound the world, especially the Germans, who are persistently deceived by British t, minefields in tho North Sea. which have accounted for many submarines.
SINKING OF THE COLE. FURTHER PARTICULARS. (Received This Dav at 11 25. a.m 1 ■ NEW YORK, June 3. According to Captain H. G. New. combe of the steamer Cole, a submarine was sighted on Sunday afternoon, 300 pards away. It fired n shot across the bows and circled the victim. They sent men aboard who sank the Cole with bombs. The crow escaped in small boats and were picked up by the American steamer’ Bristol, and brought to New York .
One U-boat was lost when chasing a vessel. * . • . , The Navy Department was apprised of the sinking on Sunday and despatched chasers and other naval vessels to the/vicinity. The Cole was , a collier bound from Boston to Portland. , Tlie closing of Atlantic ports has caus_ ed a sensation.
GREAT HAUL BY U-BOATS. NEW YORK, June 3. The passenger steamer, the City of Columbus has been submarined. An S.O.S. call was received from tho steamer at Carolina, a Porto Rican liner stating that she was attacked by a submarined. IRISH FISHING BOATS. LONDON, Jun o 2 A Gorman submarine sank nino Irish fishing boats.
