FLOODS AT MASTERTON.

MASTERTON, May 25th. There is a very heavy flood in Masterton. The Waipoua River broke throug at Masterton at a late hour last night, flooded a big proportion of the business centre.> The damage cannot be yet estimated, but it is considerable. The firebell was rung at one a.m. this morning to warn the people of danger. There are hundreds of people in the streets, rendering assistance where needed. The present is the largest flood experienced in Masterton singe 1884. FURTHER PARTICULARS. MASTENTON, This Day. A violent storm was experienced here last night, the worst for over thirty years. Heavy rain fell for hours and a terrible thunderstorm. Waipoua river burst its banks and flooded part of Masterton. the water being two to ihree feet deep in parts of the businevss portion of the town. Many houses were flooded. Some up to four feet. The flood water receded at 2 a.m., and the danger is now over. It is estimated that heavy loss will be caused.
