BY 293 TO 186

(Received Tins D*»v 11.25. a.m.) LONDON, May 9.

Hon Lloyd George said if the motion was carried, Mr Asquith ’ must again be responsible for the management of the war. Owing to French pressure, th© 'British line ’had been extended south of Cambrai, the great offensive. General Gough’s armies took over a greater length of front than they had previously held.

Mr Asquith’s motion was defeated by 293 votes against, to 186 for.

FRENCH OPINION

(Received This Dnv pt 11.25. a.m.) LONDON, May 9.

The “Echo do Paris” says th© supporters of General Robertson refuse to forgive tho Hon. Lloyd George for creating the Unity Command, and are seeking every means to overthrow him Public opinion in Britain will judge such intrigue severely. The’ “Liberto” says if a General had done such a thing in France, it would have been a veritable scandal. It is not for an officer to place his duty as a citizen before hia duty as a soldier.

AMERICAN COMMENT.

(Received '''V’o ■’* 1 2 p.Tr>.) NEW YORK, May 9th. The newspapers comment lengthily on the British political crisis. The j “World” says no Government can sue- ; cessfully carry on a war, if it is always under fire. Hon. Lloyd George should either Ttceive evidence j of public support and confidence, or ' should leivo office. | The N«w York “Times’' says Hon. ] Lloyd George’s adminstrative achievements ha/e been fruitful. His energy cannot be denied. If anybody can form a more vgorous Government let’s have him, but i there such a man? j The “Tribune” says there appears to J be an inexplicable tangle, and will re- j suit in the leadership going to Mr. As-1 nnith or (Lord Milner. No doubt Hori. Lloyd Getrge has not achieved the success expected. It seems that his position is alno.st untenable. .
