PHILIP GIBBS’ ACCOUNT.
FIGHT FOR NEUVE EGLISE
ENDS IN BRITISH RETIRING
(Received This Day at 9.50. a.m.) LONDON, April 16.*
Air Phillip Gibbs writes —The British who held Neuve Eglise for three days and nights were withdrawn, unknown to the enemy, rather than let them remain a target for unceasing shellfire.
The enemy had broken into ' the streets, but small parties of Wiltshire's, Woi'cesters and other troops fought them desperately, clearing them outseveral times.
The enemy were unusually savage. The Commanders when sending in fresh troops, sternly ordered that business must he finished, vet Neuve Eglise did not- fall to a direct assault. The enemy were obliged to concentrate artillery fire on the village making it a death trap for our men, who retired under orders to a lino a short distance away.
