POSTAL OFFICER’S DESIRES

WELLINGTON, This Day

The Wellington Branch of the, Post and Telegraph Officers Association at the annual meeting, passed a resolution that failing action to reduce cost of living all wages and salaries be increased so that the pre-war spending value bo restored; also that all public servants be treated alike in the matter of war bonuses, and their scale of relief be increased to bring into line with that approved for railway employees.

GREAT DAMAGE DONE

OPOTIKI, April Jl. The flood subsided last night, and the streets of the town are now dry. The town presents a scene of great devastation. Most of the business preiL ises and many residences contain about a foot of slimy silt on the floors and this morning the business people and residents were busily engaged clearing the rubbish away and cleaning up. Several plate glass windows were smashpdand a- small house collapsed. Fences are broken and asphalt footpaths torn, road surfaces swept away, the roadways now appearing like riverbeds. The losses of business stocks of various kinds and livestock, in addition to damage to public property, amounts to many thousands*,of pounds. A small bridge In the town was swept away. The flood was the ■ worst ever known here. The electric supply was interrupted and the town was in darkness last night. It will probably he several days before light and power is available.
