A QUIET DAY. f AUSTRALIAN <s* N.Z. CABLE ABBOCTAH' , ' S & REUTER. ] , LONDON, April 7. Sir Douglas Haig reports: Our successful minor, operations southward of the Somme this morning led to sharp fighting. The enemy strongly counterattacked. sutlering heavily, and were repulsed in two attacks at Bucquoy by our artillery fire. On the remainder of the battle- v front the day passed more quietly.

AVIATORS’ GOOD WORK. 1 LONDON, April 7. Sir Douglas Haig’s aviation report, received early this morning, states: Our aeroplanes, watching the enemy movements, reported a hostile concentration southward of the Somme. Large formations of planes immeuiatelv went- out in the rain and dropped over 500 bombs, and fired 50,000 rounds at, the assembled infantry.

We brought down 15 and drove II enemy machines down. Sixteen of our planes have not yet been located, many of which were doubtless forced to land behind our lines owing to the difficulty of finding the aerodromes in the heavy rain. The Canadian airmen have done very valuable' work in the present battle. OFFICIAT/ NEWS.

The High Commissioner reports from from London on April Bth at 11.40 a.m.: Sir Douglas Haig reports on the south bank of the Somme, eastward of Vaircsons and Corbie, we advanced our line slightly during the night. There was increased enemy artillerving on the whole battle front during the night.
