progress of the strike. On arrival of the Arthur’s Pass Express on Saturday evening at Christchurch, Mr. F. W. Furkett, Inspecting Engineer, Public Works Department was asked if he could give any information regarding the strike of the men employed on the Arthur’s Pass tunnel. Mr Furkert replied that he had been sent' to Otira to enquire; into the strike and to make a report to the Minister, and in these circumstances lie was unable to give any regarding the strike He stated that only the men at the Otira end were on strike As to whether the men at the Otiro end- were likely to remain long out on strike, Mr. Furkett said that he did not care to express an opinion
HOLE IN THE HILL. \ 18 CHAINS BETWEEN HEADINGS. SHOULD MEET TN AUGUST. “It is very gratifying to know that there is just under 18 chains separating the headings of the tunnel,” stated Mr F. W. Furkert at Christchurch on Saturday night, “and if the, men at the Otira end who are on strike return to work soon, T fully expect that the Bealev and Otira headings will meet in August.”
