A SOLDIER’S LETTER.
In a soldier’s letter (W. A. Smith) published on Saturday some rell colion was made on the value of the Overseas Parcels. This statement is very mueli at variance with other reports received from the front. Tho same soldier writing to the Hon. Secretary of tile Overseas Club, Hokitika branch, from ,loSpital in England, in November last says:
“Hear Miss Carlcy,—Just a line to thank you for the parcel which I have
gust rccfeived thorough the Overseas Club. It was no'good to me here, as T am not on the. diet to indulge in luxuries at present, so I made a present to my Nurses who will npprocuue it more than me, owing to the high price of living, and the very poor pay for the work they do.
The parcel would have been a God send at the front. I am glad to have the pleasure of distributing the gifts to those who really deserve it.
“I have been gassed very had. This is my fifth week in bed and tilery is very little improvement ,to date. Gas is the worst thing that is used in this war. Being a stranger to me lam pleas od to know that the boys who are out here suffering hardships every ■ day, there is always someone out in dear old Sunny New Zealand thinking and praying for them to bring them safely home .again. “Well, .there is a heavy snow storm on. It started yesterday afternoon and it is still coming down. I will close now as this writing is a little trouble for me. Yours Truly, W. A. .Smith, Hampden, Street, Hokitika.” ,
A very cordial acknowledgement was received also from a ward mate of Smith’s also and appreciated very much the gifts sent from the Overseas Club.
