SOLDIERS’ CLUBS
VIEWS OF A CABINET’ MINISTER WELLINGTON, Feb. 11.
A deputation from New Zealand Returned Soldier s Association waited on tlfo" Hon. G. W. Russell in reference to his remarks', regarding the proposed expenditure of large sums on permanent clubs for returned soldiers. The deputation expressed the opinion that clubs had a good influence generally and assisted considerably in the repatriation of the soldiers.
Mr. Russell said he would not himself give a decision in the matter but, would take the opinion of the Cabinet.

WELLINGTON, Feb. 11. following has been received front Sir Ernest Shnckleton : —“On this the, anniversary of my return to New Zealand from the Antarctic, I wish to let my friends and the public, know that my memory of the great kindnesses shown to me in New Zealand is as vivid as when I received them a year ago.”

It is reported that the Coalminers Federation has made a\demand on the Coalmine Owners. Association for am increase of 20 per cent, in wages, and hewing rates. The Auckland agreement made last year, granting increases ot 17i per cent, to 20 per cent, were for three year s or for six months after the war.
