Word has been received "that Private R. E. E. McLeod has been wounded in France. Prior to enlisting he wn s employed in the Lnnd Office at Hokitika.

Mrs James Kearns, of Hall street, received ‘the following wily from the Minister of Defence yesterday, which speaks for itself:—“Regret to inform you that a cable received this day re. ports 60431, W. J. Kearns, seriously ill on February 4th, at the New Zealand Genera!! Hospital, Brockenliurst. lobar pneumonia. Please accept my sympathy and hope for a speedy recovery.”

Mr J. A. Frostiek, National Efficiency Commissioner for district, wil' l>e visitin" the. Coast next Week, coming via Nelson. He will meet the sawmillors at a general meeting at Greymout-li on Monday, when steps are proposed to set up a special advisory committee in regard to the timber industry. The chairman and lion, secretary of the Westland Advisory Committee have been invited to attend the meeting, also to be in consultation with Mr Frostiek on the points raised at the meeting. On Tuesday at Hokitika, Mr Frostiek will meet the members of the Westland Advisory Committee at the County Chambers, to discuss various matters of interest affecting this district. All wool small size, children’s sox arc being slaughtered for 8d per pair, at Schroder’s groat clearing sale.
