CHRISTCHURCH. Feb. 7
The letter addressed by the Mayor (Mr. H. Holland) to members of Parliament and others regarding the meeting to be held next Wednesday evening to receive the report of the delegates who visited te Arthur’s Pass tunnel last week, was read by Dr. Thacker, M.P., at yesterday’s meeting of the, Lyttelton Harbour Board. Dr. Thacker said he thought the Board should whole-heartedly back up the movement and endeavour to get the tunnel completed before the end 'b" war. He asked the chairman to ask members of the Board to be present at the meeting and assist in the matter. He understood that representation's on the subject would be made'during the approaching early session of Parliament with the object, of. “getting a move\ on.”
The chairman (Mr. Albert Kaye) said he would bo glad indeed if members attended the meeting. He was entirely in accord with the object in view, though he was not quite clear how the Board’s funds would he benefited by the completion of the tunnel; but its completion would certainly bo a’ benefit to the whole of Canterbury. Dr. Thacker: The trade that now goes from Wellington to the West Const would go through Lyttelton. The chairman said they ought to bestir themselves in the matter of the completion of the tunnel. He
glad that the Mayor had taken action, and he hoped that members of tV Board would do their level best to hack up the Mayor’s effortsi.
