and small Consternation among the
large audience assembled at the Princess Theatre to witness the opera “The Gondoliers." The second act had progressed ■'well, and Marco (Mrs Staveley; was ringing the second verse of “Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes,” the author’s recipe for “perfect happiness.” On this pleasing melody broke the clang of
the central firebell nearby. Several firemen among the audience and others
made a hurried exit, arid as the hell kept iup its clamour, others followed and the hack seats were well emptied. Despite the disconcerting disturbance Mrs Staveley struck to her theme, and finished her song to rounds of applause the encore was given with the clamour of the firebell as a- main accompaniment, but Mrs Staveley went ou bravely, and storms of applause rewarded the plucky effort. The opera then ‘breaks
into chorus, and that merry throng of youth and beauty dashed on to the stage to the strains oT “Here We Are ‘At the rish of our Lives.” As soon as an opportunity was offered an announcement was made from the stage of the loeation of the fire and the <r-
