A CHILD DROWNED
CHRISTCHURCH, January 17
The infant daughter of Thomas M’Clurg of Redcliffs aged one year and nine months, was drowned in the estuary'this morning. She wandered away and presumably foil into the wafer.

GISBORNE January 18
The Hospital Commission was occupied nearly all day with the evidence of the matron, Miss Tait, who lengthily reviewed evens at the .institution since the beginning of f 1916. She attributed the trouble at the hospial to the longstanding, lack of discipline and the resentment of the staff when she enforced discipline. She stated that Dr Bowie and herself did liot work harmoniously and this aeentuaijed the trouble. . The petitioners’ ease is near conclusion. COMMITTED FOB TOTAL. GISBORNE, .Jan 19. Leonard Porter, eye specialist and light-weight boxing , champion, was committed for trial to-day on a charge of arson, arising out of a fire at his residence on New Year’s Eve.
