SOLDIERS’ SOCKS.

' PRICE OF KNITTING. WOOL. The President of the Lady Liverpool Committee Hokitika Branch (Mrs W. J Butler) has received the following letter from the Hon. W. F. Massey, dated .Tan 3rd— Dear Madam—Re knitting wool. Further to my letter on the 20th. ultimo. T have to advise you on looking into the matter l find in regard to your statement “if the. wool is not being supplied nt 5/6 ( soldiers are being exploited” that only a very limited supply of knitting wool could be made

available at 5/6 per lb, the better qualities secured costing 7/- and 8/5 per lb. ! The total quantity of wool arranged 1 for by the Hon. Minister in Charge of Munitions and Supplies is perhaps small compared with the barge supply required to meet the demands of your good work : but the quantity represents all that the Hon. Minister could safely procure without interfering with the steady deliveries of Khaki Cloths, Flannels. Socks, Underclothing, etc., which our N.Z. Woollen Mills ore under con- . tract to supply for Military Purposes You will, 1 am sure .readily appreciate that, the limited number of carding machines must necessarily bo employed on these essential articles in the first instance. 1 also gather that the cabled j, enquiries made by the JTon. Minister j with a view to securing imported quan- ! ( tities of knitting wool of good quality, j • revealed the- fact that orders could not j be. executed except at extremely high ; rates. , T trust, therefore, you will under-

stand, that while the Government is most ansious to respond to the request to assist you in your good work which is so highly appreciated by all in terested, at the momerii no suitable opportunity presents itself for the exeeuion of orders. The position however. i»is being carefully watched, so that an- ■ vantage may be taken of any chance I to assist in the desired direction.
