EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE.

ANNUAL MEETING. WELLINGTON Jan. 2nd. The annual meeting‘of the New Zealand Educational Institute is being held. In the absence of the president, Mr. do Berry (Hokitika), Air. Endy, one of the vice-presidents is presiding. The gathering, which is very •representative, was welcomed by the Mayor Mr. J. P. Luke). An interesting report by the executive regarding the position of education was read. It deplored the fact that the idea that the national system of education should become the guiding spirit of national life had been given a check through the establishment .by some denominations of church schools. It was agieetl that the present method of electing Education Boards was unsatisfactory.

The following remit was adopted:—

“That this Institute should endeavour to impress upon the public and the Government the groat importance of providing improved educational facilities, and that the Government be urged during 1918 to provide adequate funds for school buildings playgrounds,, a snfli cient number of inspectors to enable the work of advising and assisting teachers to he satisfactorily carried out, medical inspection, free dental treatment for children, compulsory continuation classes, conveyance of children to central schools, additional staffing, and a Worker’s Educational Association.”
