DAMAGE SMALL.* [per press association —copyright.] WELLINGTON, This Day. Early yester morning, the mate of the steamer Kara, berthed at Queen’s Wharf, was awakened by smoke in his cabin. 1 Investigation disclosed that one of the firemen’s cabins above the engine room was ablaze.. The mate and some seamen attempted to extinguish the flames with buckets of water, but the Fire Brigade’s assistance had to be obtained before the outbreak was got under. The contents of the cabin were badly damaged, but no other part of the ship was affected. 'The fire is supposed to have originated through a light left burning in the cabin. The Karn arrived from Greymouth on Thursday and should have sailed on Saturday for Tarakohe and Taknka. The cargo included a quantity of benzine. which, however, was stowed some distance from the scene of tho fire.
