Both sides have put their utmost into the campaign . To-day’s papers are largely devoted to earnest appeals to the various sections. It is impossible to forecast the result. General opinion is that- which ever way it goes the margin will not he largo. Hotels will be closed throughout to morrow which is a public holiday. Regulations prohibit the posting or announcing of results at public places. GREAT RECEPTION FOR HUGHES. SYDNEY, Dec. 18th. Tf the reception accorded to Mr. Tlughe s on bis arrival in Sydney is any criterion as to the referendum feeling. Governments supporters must have felt highly gratified. Thousands of returned soldiers met Mr. Hughes at the station ) and carried him shoulder high. There were remarkable demonstrations throughout the crowded streets, and the speeches were wildly cheered. It was probably the greatest reception Mr. Hughes ever had.
