A Maori girl named Annie Reinn aged thirteen years, suffered shocking injuries as the result of a tent in which she was sleeping catching lire on Tuesday at Kurangaroa. She died in the hospital yesterday. CHARGE OF ARSON. GTSBRNE, Dec. 7th. At the Supreme Court John Sheriff! Dods, who lias pleaded guilty to embezzling about £2OOO from the Gisborne Gas Company, was further charged with arson in allegedly setting the company’s offices afire. The Crown suggested that the fire was started with the object of destroying the firm’s hooks, which contained evidence as to defalcations to which Dods had confessed since the lire'. After five hours’ retirement the jury disagreed and his Honor ordered a now trial for Monday. , FINED FOR. STRIKING. PALMERSTON X.. Dee 7 Mr. Kcnrick, S. M. gave judgment to-day in a case in which the Inspector of Factories proceeded against Phillip King, a flax-miller, for being a party to a strike on Sept. 7th. King was convicted and fined .CIO. Macdonald, until recently practising us a solicitor, was committed for trial (m- charges of theft of £136 and wrongfully converting to his own use £3OB, both trust moneys. Nothing lvas transpired regarding the interview of the Reform Committee with the Prime Minister over the proposal to subsitute Mr. C. P. Skerrett, K.C., for the Mayor of Wellington as the Government nominee, hut the. latter’s position is streughened by the fact that one of the most prominent Reform workers placed on the hostile committee has no part in the movement, but, on contrary, has written to Mr Luke pledging bis active support. The election is not likely to occur until February. COLONEL HUGHES WITHDRAWS. WELLINGTON, D e c. 7. For medical reasons, Colonel Hughes announces tlie withdrawal of his candidature for the anticipated vacancy for •the Wellington North seat. CENSOR’S WORK. WELLINGTON, Dee. 10 The Central Chamber of Commerce has been notified by the Marine Department that all cablegrams relating to insurance and cargo on vessels carrying troops from New Zealand will he required to sent to the Chief Post Office Wellington, for transmission to the High Commissioner in the official code. „.,e High Commissioner would decide the messages which were subject to censorship both in New Zealand and London, and finally messages would-be sent to the addresses in Britain.
