It was mentioned at the Harbour Board meeting last night that some local business men had entered into correspondence with outside firms' with the object of having cargoes of timber ,sigit over the Hokitika wharf. It is understood that the local shipping company is also prepared to foster any scheme that will result in an export trado from Hokitika.
A young lad attempted to mount a timber laden wagon that was moving down one of the streets on Wednesday evening at the usual pace, by putting his foot on the nave ol one of the wheels. The result ol the action was not as anticipated and the hoy was thrown forward on the ground, .Luckily nothing serious resulted, the wheel of the waggon passing by his body by a margin of inches only, and he was able to scramble to hi s feet unhurt, though it is to be hoped lie will not have many other as close calls to eternity as this instance almost proved to he.'
Wo published last week a cable stating on the authority of the New York “World,” that the Allied troops assisting the. Italians included French Chasseurs. A fuller message in Australian papers contains, after the reference to the Chasseurs, the additional words, “And the world-famous Anzacs, who won immortal fame at the Dardanelles.” Why the only part of the message, which was of special interest to New Zealand should have been omitted in despatching it to the Dominion, is not explicable on any {■•round that we can think of.
Tt is expected that to-morrow (Saturday) evening at the Lady Liverpool Depot there will be a number of choice plants for sale. Mr Brocklehurst has promised a number of “everlasting” cucumber plants, lettuce plants, several new species of plants such as peach and lemon vines, tomatoberry plants, and choice sweet pea plants. Derailed of these may he seen in the Depot windows. Also, Mr Boyd is contributing choice “named” varieties of cactus dahlia plants. There is sure to he a very keen demand for the above.
