DESERTER. HIDES IN a CAVE. PALMERSTON N. November 15. At the courtmartial of Michael Kellalca some peculiar evidence was disclosed. Accused said he bad lived -in a dug-out and subsequently in a cave at the back of the district of Waitotnra ! for several months. He was afraid to come out because his employed had ter- ! rorised him by the statement that if he ! came .out he would be shot. r llie acj ensed’s employer did sentry-go while accused cut the busli for him. Ihe passing of sentence was deferred. Other action will probably follow.

A court-martial has imposed the following sentences for desertion: — Robert Horace Phillips, Inglewood, f eleven months; Frank Vincent Gully, Mnstcrton, 112 days
PURSE FOR NEW RECORD
DUNEDIN, Nov 14th
'file Forbury Park Trotting Club decided this morning to offer a purse of €IOO at its meeting on December 1 for a fresh mile track record, which is now held hv Emmeline, 2min 8 3-ssocs. M. Edwards has agreed to attack the record with Adelaide Direct.
i LTNEMAN INJURED.
WELLINGTON, Nov. 14th
Charles Stewart, of the electric lighting staff, while working at the top of a pole in Adelaide Road to-day, received a severe shock, falling to the roadway. He was removed to the hospital, and to-night is reported to have improved a little, but the extent of his injuries has not been definitely ascertained.
A CRUSHED FOOT
WELLINGTON, Nov. 14
I Victor Williams, a resident of Tipper ■ Hutt, was admitted to hospital sufj fcring from a crushed foot, caused by i a sash-weight falling on it. A NEW DIOCESE. NEW PLYMOUTH. Nov 13. A conference of tho Anglican clergy and laity from the proposed Taranaki diocese, embracing portions of Auckland and Wellington, was held to-day. Rishop Averill presiding. It was decided to take immediate steps to create i a separate diocese and raise an endowI ment fund of £25,000.
A FATAL RESULT.
DANNEVIRKE, November 20,
Moses Martin, a labourer, aged 33, died in the hospital, a s a result of an accident some days ago. While working on the 'demolition of one of the buildings gutted in the big fire, someP thing gave way and he fell on a crowbar standing upright in the ground It penetrated his left lung under the left armpit. ’Death resulted from septic, pneumonia.
