Among the arrivals by Gooch’s Boy a L Mail Motor Service last night was Private Miller, hack from the front, who had been for some time at Hamner Sanatorium where he has made a good recovery.
Mr. Gooch inaugurated the Motor Mail Service from Jackson last night. There as a large mail for Hokitika, ten hags in all, and this with three trough passengers completed a large load. The run through was made in good time, the Post Office being reached at 6.50. and the mails "ere promptly sorted to the great satisfaction of the public.
Mr. James Finn, of Marsdeu, a very old resident and public man, died at j the Grey River hospital yesterday. He represented the Marsden riding continuously for the last 37 years, but did not offer himself for re-election at this weeks’ contest, owing to failing health. A native of County Cork, he left Ireland a young man of 2(1 summers, and arrivial at Port Chalmers in the. ship “Truth and Time” in 1861. The next half-score of years of his life were spent on the Otago goldfields in the days of the old mining rushes. The lure of gold brought him to the West Coast, and, i n 1872, he settled at Marsden, where he has resided ever since He was unmarried. During the time of membership of the Grey County Council he occupied the position of Chairman on several occasions and also represented that body o n tbe Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. He was 81 years •€ age.
A farewell social wiTi be held iu the Town Hall, Rimu, this (Friday) evening, tendered to Private J. Irwin, (on final leave) and to Mr. T. Kioly, (going into camp) Music by Mr. Lawn. Gentlemen 2s; ladies Is.—Advt. At the lecture at the Town Hall last evening, a very interesting series of lantern slides was shown by Mr. Jas. King to illustrate Mr. Varney’s lecture. The pictures were shown to admirable advantage, and Mr. Varney specially thanked Mr, King at the dose of the entertainment for his invaluable assistance and help in making the address so much more interesting.
Messrs Luke, Varney and Brownell, officials of the Y.M.C.A. who paid a brief visit to Hokitika yesterday, left early this morning. They aro due at the Cathedral city to-night when Mr. Varney is to repeat his address. Subsequent to the ladies’ meeting yesterday, the party motored out to Lake lvanieri. They enjoyed the outing very much, and Mr. Brownell considered it an ideal spot for a Y.M.C.A. conference. camp, and hopes to. hook the locality for a future national gathering.
Two of the trophies brought- hack from France by Mr. Varney and on view at the Town Hall yesterday, were visitors 1 books to the front line trench hutments, iwhere the Y.M.C.A. ,men had their canteens. The soldiers by the hundred had recorded tlieir names and opinions of the Y.M.C.A. work and attention, and very complimentary were some of the remarks. Among those signing whose names were picked out, were Lance-Corpl. J. Andrews, and Private J. Hearn of Arahura.
