COUNTY ELECTIONS.

RIMU HIDING

The only contested seat yesterday for the Westland Council was that lor the Rimu Hiding, .in which the sitting member, Mr. A. Clifton, was opposed by Mr. K. A. Wells. The polling proceeded quietly throughout the day, and shortly after 7- o’clock last evening the ‘following result of the voting was posted up: Booth : Clifton : Wells : Hokitika 20 26 • R.imu 32 17 Woodstock 11 35 South Spit, 1 4. Totals 64 82 Three years ago when the same candidates were in-the field the voting on that occasion was as follows:—A. Clifton 86; F. A. Wells 64, so that it will be seen the positions are reversed on this contest.

Mr. E. A. Wells the newly elect*-u member of the Westland County Council is a well-known resident of the Kanieri-Woodstock district. He will he the only new member in the Council tbo other sitting members have been re-elected unopposed, Mr. A. Clifton lias been a member of the County Council for 1(H- years, during which extended time he lifts occupied the chair on different occasions. Mr. Clifton entered the Council in flic days when Rimu district was'embraced in the then larger Kanieri Riding. Afterwards lie has sat continuously as the representative of the Rimu Riding. He was the Father of the Council as the longest sitting member, holding his seat continuously without a break. Mr. Clifton was a popular member with mining organisations in tbe' district, in which he took an intimate interest,. Mr. Wells ha s a good knowledge of the district - and should he conversant thoroughly with its needs.

The official count of the votes and (ho scrutiny of the rolls is taking place this forenoon, and on completion the formal declaration of the poll will lie made .

The new Councillor will he able to take his seat at the Council table at the annual meeting of the 28th inst, when the Council assembles to elect a Chairman for the ensuing year.
