RUSSIAN UPHEAVAL

BOLISIVIKIS BEATEN.

DAMAGE TO WINTER- PALACE

LONDON November 12,

The “Daily Chronicle’s” Petrograd correspondent states that the Bolisivikis are no longer master of the situation. They are hampered by the insufficiency of reliable men and important posts are entrusted to youths with ludicrous results.

The garrison 'contains many anxious for peace, consequently there is much dissension. On the other hand the sailors are willing, on the whole to continue the struggle against the provisional Government,. Some thousands marched to Petrograd to defend the Bolisivikis. The latter’s military adherents arrived with hundreds of women for the soldiers at the Winter Palace who handed them over to the lioentious treatment of drunken soldiers in the various barracks.

Inspection of the Winter Palace showed that wanton damage had been committed by the Bolisivikis. The floor wa s ankle deep in Provisional Government’s correspondence, the cupboards and drawers having been forced, and the. pictures slashed. The ex-Czar s cabinet was wrecked. Luckily the Provisional Government had safely stored the principal art treasures in the cellars.

KERENSKY’S PROCLA MATION

Kerensky has issueu « (proclamation 1 in which he appeals to the troops who joined the traitors under a misunderstanding, or force to return and to fulfil their duties to the Fatherland.

Sunday’s messages contained the Kerensky proclamation to the' armies, stating he remains Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief having arrived at the head of the troops who remained faithful.

700 CASUALTIES. LONDON November 13. Other despatches declare the Maximalists are retreating in disorder before Kerensky. Also that the Afaximalists at Afoseow were defeated with seven hundred casualties. PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT. LONDON November 13. The Daily Chronicle learns that Ramsay AfaeDonald, on Afohday, received a telegram from Kerensky stating the Provisional Government had been re-es-tablished. * *

CIVIL WAR. /' LONDON November. 13. Copenhagen reports no news. from Petrograd on Afonday which is regarded as a proof that civil war is m full progress. The Soviet Revolutionary Committee issued an order to Petrograd shopkeepers to re-open on Afonday, also appealing to workers to abstain f rom strikes and disorders. It fts under stood the AV orkmens Council have appointed a sailor Gov-ernor-General Finland and an ° n gine-driver vice-Governor. ' The Railway union at Petrograd threatened a general strike, unless conciliation was reached by the appointment of a democratic power, representing all ‘ the parties. Negotiations are proceeding. The Bolshevikis have dropped their offensive attitude. The Army Headquarters ha s approved (* combinations of democratic groups of combatants at Afoseow to come to terms on a basis of creating a Socialistic Government, including Bolshevikis.

“SEEING RED.”

PLENTY OF BLOODSHED. (Received This Dav at 11.25. a.m.) LONDON, Nov. 13. The ‘Daily Chronicle’s Petrograd cor. respondent, summarising the position on Monday, says the Provisional Government lacks sufficient forces to maintain office, and the Bolsheviki lack sufficient; to exert authority. Both sides are awaiting reinforcements.

Bolsheviki on Sunday besieged and captured four military training schools and fill© telephone exchange. Bolsheviki had previously armed thousands of young undiscinlined factory workers, forming so-called “Red Guard,s” capable of any atrocities. They massacred hatches of captured Cadets with the utmost brutality. Three Cadets were trampled to death during the battle for the telephone exchange. The bodies word" left in the street. Crowds capturing one school, where the defenders used all their ammunition, shouted “Chop them up.” Frenzied sailors tore the Cadets to pieces. Rifle-fire was heard everywhere in the city. An armoured car, containing an inexperienced Bolsheviki crew, plunged headlong into the river. Field guns were used against the Cadets who were defending for seven hours, when a larger gun broke the walls. The survivors narrowly escaped

lynching. Many were thrown into the river. * . There were eight hundred casualties on Sunday. The situation is becoming wdrse, and street fighting will inevitable increase. Kerensky, with troops and artillery, is reported to have reached the outskirts of the city. Additional Kerensky troops are reported upon the Finland railway. Thus troops are approaching the capital on two sides. • a . Stockholm messages states Kerensky's proclamation was issued at Ga.tchena, where the Bolshivikis were engaged in a battle with the troops from the front. There was great bloodshed, ending in the defeat of the Bolsheviki. Russian troops on the West Front sent a mfessage of loyalty to Kerensky.

The Exchange Telegraph’s Haparanda correspondent, states after sev ei o fighting Kerensky has triumphed and all Cabinet Ministers except two have been liberated. Troops in Petrograd are now siding with Kerensky. ' STOCKHOLM, Nov. 14. Advices state Kerensky controls part ‘of Petrograd, especially Nevski Prospect. The Bolskeviki are refuging in Smolny Institute. A report is current that. Lenin has been captured. , WIN FOR KERENSKY.
