THE PAEROA ARRIVES.

Tlio s.s. Paeroa recently purchased by the Hokitika Shipping Company arrived from Auckland via Wellington and Westport‘early yesterday morning. The steamer came via the East Coa-i, the route involving a trip of 800 miles,. a'good test of the sea-going qualities of the now purchase. Prior to lear ing Auckland the steamer had keen laid up for over a year, so that her machinery would take some time to adjust.

During yesterday the steamer was inspected by a large number of people. She has a gross tonnage of 91 tons, and is a smart little ship. She arrived in command of Captain Jamieson of the Defender. The trip from Auckland to Wellington took 82 hours She left Wellington on Thursday night for the Coast but a slight defect to the machinery necessitated a call at Westport on Saturday, when fresh water and supplies were taken in. Iho steamer has several tons of cargo from Auckland including mainly sugar, and cement.

The, Paeroa is a roomy boat- for passengers. The saloon below is capacious and the ladies’ cabin on deck is comfortable looking, and will be appreciated by the Southern travellers after the accommodation obtainable on the previous boat. She has good seagoing qualities with a fair turn or speed. The remarks passed by the inspecting public yesterday indicated a general appreciation of the new purchase for the southern trade, and it is hoped the little boat will have a good run of luck in the southern service, on which she enters to-day by taking a good cargo to Olcarito. A trip to the far . south will follow immediately a good deal of cargo offering as a re*sult of the enforced hold up during the past three months. when a boa t was not available for tlio south trade.
