Since the seriou s fire in the Masonic Hotel there were three or four incipient outbreaks of fire caused from the smouldering kapoek of the upstairs bedding. On Saturday afternoon smoke was observed emitting from a skylight, and it was found that a large bedroom which had escaped apparently from the main blaze, was on fire. The outbreak was soon under control, the smouldering kapoek removed. About 0.20 on Saturday an alarm of fire was given, and again about B.4fi on Sunday morning the central hell was rung. A Press Association telegram from New Plymouth states tliat- Sir James Allen announced on Friday night that tlio Thirtieth Reinforcements had reached a port of call —“all safe.” It is notified in tliis issue that the Rokatahi' bridge will bo closed to all traffic from Thursday morning to Saturday evening inclusive, of this week. The health of Mr. Hughes, Prime Minister of Australia has lately been so indifferent as to cause his friends to seriously doubt whether he will be able to stand the strain of office much longer. Mr. Thomas Salter, an old and esteemed resident of Westport, passed away at the Westport Hospital on Wednesday night. Deceased, who was native of Isle of Wight, was 61 years of age. Ho bad been forty years in New Zealand, landing in Otago, worked there at his trade (brick-laying), and when the Rinni rush broke out he came to the West Coast, working at alluvial mining at Hokitika and later ai Ross. Mr. Varney, the gentleman referred to, will be supported by Messrs C. M. Luke and E. C. Brownell of Wellington headquarters, who will also speak. Thete will be a public address in the evening, and in the afternoon the ladies of the. town and district are asked to assemble and hear short addresses on Y.M.C.A. work. Particulars are advertised to-day. The Boles llevision Committee set up by the New Zealand Trotting Conference has since been busily engaged in the work of revision aim consolidation. Further meetings have been held during last- week, and at the meeting on Friday at Christo!lurch there were present Messrs J. Rowe (chainfan), .Mackay, Roberts, SMig and Mark. The draft, as presented by the solicitor engaged on the work was considered, and it was decided to adjourn to a' date to be arranged in the* next month, to finally pass the whole code.
