What he » described as a serious shortage of certificated traction en-gine-drivers was referred to by Air. Anstey in the House of Representatives. He asked the Alinister of Internal Affairs whether it was proposed to take action to remedy the position. , The Hon. G. W. Russell in reply, stated that the matter had been carefully considered and it was proposed to * make two alterations. The age would he reduce from 21 to 19 years, and if it were ropresen-ed that a certificated man could not he obtained in a district, the Inspector of Machinery would examine an applicant, and if the man were found t° he competent, the inspector would give him a certificate.
