ITALIAN CAMPAIGN

TROOPS FROM RUSSIAN FRONT

BROKEN LINE RESTORED

LONDON. Oct. 27. Air "Ward Price; telegraphing mu., from the Italian front, snvs:—Three hundred thousand Germans have been added to the Austrian forces in tin l Isonzo Valley between Flezz.o and Tolmino. ’Phis vast strength is concentrated on a front of twenty miles, thereby increasing the forty Austrian divisions facing the Italian Second Army by 60 per cent. There are also certain reinforcements behind Mackensen, who is directing the offensive. Otto von Endow is commanding the German contingent.

The Italians are faced by .one of Germany’s supreme efforts with a singleness of purpose in complete harmony in action.

The Gormans carried out the task of transporting the huge military organisation, which is no longer needed in Russia, to a place where it can i»« used to tholiest effect.

The transport has been an immense leaf.

The Germans uprooted the whole armies and carried them across Europe. Taking advantage of a thick fog, the Germans suddenly made a thrust at the Italian outpost south of Monte Nero, where a German army corps attacked an Italian brigade, bursting through hy sheer weight of numbers, and penciling the hanks of the Isonzo, Favoured hy night rain the Germans pushed three miles up the valley, and seized the 1 town of Carporettn. They then divided, and part attacked the Italian bastion of Monte St Arasbilla., whilst the rest pushed on to Robee, hoping to turn the whole line of tflie Italian defence. Fortunately both Germans efforts were held up. Meanwhile other Germans made frontal attacks on the main Tsonz.o line, while attacks from the German bridgeheads at Saint Maria and Santa Lucia, south of Tolmino, succeeded hy a surprise.

The Italians were driven out of Globocak, one of the key positions in the main defence.

It was essential to retake Globocak immediately, and a brigade of Bersaglieras were sent forward with orders to recapture Blobocak at all costs.' Tt did so with bombs and bayonets, and the line was restored.
