GENERAL GODLEY’S REPORT WELIJSfiTOS, Oct 26. 11l the House of Representatives this afternoon, the Minister of Defence read the following summary of work of the New Zealand Division for the month of October, as supplied by General Godley : —The division took part with great and complete success , in the British advance on October 4. The division attacked at 6 a.m. on a front of 2,000 yards and captured Gravenstafel Village, , Abraham ] Heights, Berlin Wood and Kronprinz Farm, besides numerous other fortified points and trench elements. All objectives were taken according to timetable behind artillery and machinegun barrages. Tbe artillery co-oper-ation was good. The German positions were penetrated to a depth of 1,700 yards at points. The enemy fought well at first, but later surrendered freely, and 1,159 prisoners of four different German divisions were taken, also 59 machine gnns. The enemy were so disorganised that no serious counter-attack was made. One counter attack on a small scale was destroyed at the outset, during assembly east of Kronprinz Farm. The enemy suffered a serious set-back, and lost valuable ground. Befor e the relief arrived the captured ground was consolidated and trenches dug. The division was again engaged on October 12, and attacked Bellevue Spur. Enemy, wire and heavy machine-gun fire from pill-boxes, combined with the bad state'of the ground, held up the attacking brigades. The battalions attacked in turn with great determination, but were unable to penetrate the enemy’s defences. Some progress was made, nevertheless, and ninety-three prisoners were taken. Since October 12 there have been no offensive operations, but the line gained was consolidated and held till relief. ’’ The Minister added The Defence orders for Messines were- cap- ; , tured and have been',retained as an. official war trophy for New Zealand.
