During the Russian retreat from Riga while the last detachments were, traversing the town, a rumour spread that German residents wore firing at, and bombing the troops from windows, whereupon rioters mostly civilians systemtically attacked the German houses, and exterminated every German, not sparing women or children. The rabble committed every imaginable outrage. The town during the orgies was under a heavy bombardment by the Germans, on one hand, and the Russians on the other. The Germans used gas shells'and’ poisonous fumes, killing both plunderers and intended victims. |
