HYDRO-EIECTRIC MATTERS
“It is the firm intention of the Government, as soon as conditions become normal, to utilise to tlie fullest limit the'water-power of this Dominion for the purpose of generating electric energy. The claims for consideration from Southland and Western Otago will not be overlooked.” Such was tlie printed reply given in Parliament lately 7 by the Hon W. Fraser (Minister for Public Works) to a question asked by Mr J. C. Thomson, M.P. for Wallace.
Replying to a question by Mr J. C. Thomson, M.P. for Wallace: “ Whether it is intended to give effect to the recommendation of the Council of Education to establish a course for the training of hydroelectrical engineers?”—the Hon J. A. Hanan (Minister for Education) said “ The recommendation of the Council of Education to which the honorable member’s question refers was intended. I believe, merely to emphasise, with a view to industrial efficiency, the necessity of maintaining courses sufficient to meet the requirement of training for hydro-electric engineers. At the time of the Council’s meeting substantial progress had already been made on these lines by the Cdiiterbury College School of Engineering, in which I am assured complete laboratories for hydraulics and also for electrical work have been installed at a heavy cost, in order that the fullest facilities may be given to students on both the practical and the theoretical side.”
