Mr. William Gardiner died yesterday at bis residence at Ross. The deceased nil old and highly respected resident of the. district was born in Ireland and had reached liis 89th. year. He was one of the first miners on the Victorian gold-fields was at Gabriel’s Gully rush (Otago) and came to the West Coast in 1867 with that eager, untiring and confident ’band of pioneers. In the early days ho was boatman at the Hokitika River and for many years conducted a general carrier’s business at Ross. The deceased who up to a few weeks had enjoyed excellent health, was one of the best known and respected men in the To tarn district and leaves' a wife and family of three sons and three daughters to mourn their loss. The sons are Messrs Archibald , Harold, aaid John Gardiner and the daughters, Mesdames J. Stewart and J. Steele (Kuinara), and T. Coyle (Hokitika). The 'deceased also leaves a brother in Dunedin.
