HON. WINSTINE CHURGHIIL.
SPEECH ON THE WAR. ; BRITAIN’S PREPARATIONS. j [ AUSTRALIAN «% N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION] I (Received this day at 12.30 a.m.) LONDON, October u. Hon. W. Churchill speaking at Aldwych Olub said it was not the time to talk of peace. We were entering the ! sternest phase of the war and were I still confronted by the systems which had trampled Belgium and Servia and j had levied war on women, and children had stored the bacilli of a pestilence in the capital of friendly States. If Germany were isaved from defeat, she would be able to persuade her people j to uphold the Kaiser and Junker class, while she approached the Entente with the claim :—■ “Let us bo ’ friends and cultivate diplomatic j and commercial relations.” I Their devastating campaign had prov--ed that we must not accept this solution. j If the Germans were decisively beaten, they would lose faith in the prei sent governing system and realise that ! they were squandering their Biamark- : ian inheritance. If the German people, by effort of self -redemption, seized control of their own Government and became, an upgrown nation like- other emancipated democracies, then there would be a real j peace in the world, not a war thinly veneered by diplomatic platitudes, j A second, great submarine campaign ' ; has been checked and our reserves of food and capacity of producing necessaries, greatly augmented during the twenty-three weeks of the present offensive. The armies, next year, would be stronger, and better supplied. The ton'nage of shells last week hurled at the German trenches was four-fold that which was fired at the Somme offensive.. It was Britain’s duty to maintain the offensive until the American feiuf forceinents were thrown into the war.
