MILITARY APPEAL BOARD.
FRIDAY SEPTEMBER, 28, 1917, Tho Board sat at. the Magistrate’s Court Hokitika at 10 a.m. Present, —Messrs J. S. Etar.s (Chairman) J. D. Milton and E. C. Studholmc. Captain Pilkington Militarw representative) and C. IV. Duncan (secretary were also present. ; The' \fblll) wing appeal*? wore fleaJlt with:— ■ Robert Elliot, Hokitika, Class A.— , Appellant said his railway appeal had been dismissed. He was appealing for financial assistance. Was married in ] 1916. j
The Chairman said he would recommend the financial assistance he granted. If granted, the appeal would he dismissed and he would go forward with the November
draft. Robert Adamson, appealing on behalf of William Robert Adamson, and the latter’s own appeal, of Matainui (Mr. Wells).— ; Robert Adamson deposed [William was his son 27 years of age. Another I son was in camp. Had one daughter FI years of age. Financial position was detailed. Had 1,230 sheep, 210 cattle, 30 horses. Both sons had enlisted and were turned down. It was impossible to get, labour to w*ork down, there at present. His son helped on. the farm and did the shearing. The Chairman said the application, would be allowed to stand over till the end of the year. Meantime the shearing could be done, and they could also assist other people in shearing. The question could then come up for consideration again at the end of the vear. ,
Jane Irwin appeal on behalf of John Irwin (Mr. Wells)—appeal withdrawn, the man having gone into camp. James, H. Cropper, Wait aim (Mr. Wells). Air. Wells staled the man had gone into camp and had been turned down, and had returned to his farm. Sergt.-Mjtjor Atkin reported Cropper had received indefinite leave from the camp authorities.—Adjourned sine die. Charles Pfnhlert, appeal on behalf of .Tames E. Laughton of Knnieri and latter’s own appeal (Mr. Sellers.) C. Pfahlert stated Laughton was 31 years of age and single and had two brothers at the front. "Witness -employed 2 men and 2 hoys. Owing to ill-health, was unable, to bake himself at present. Laughton was the foreman baker and he was unable to replace him. James Laughton deposed he had on-' ly two brothers, both serving. Had a mother and one sister depending on him.
The chairman said the family record of applicant was a good one, two out of three serving. It was a nessontinl industry.—Adjourned sine die, but may be called up tit any timeGordon Barker, Kaniori, classed A. —No appearance; struck out. William George Cain, Kanieri (Mr Murdoch) Classed A. The appelant stated lie was single, aged 25 years, and was a fireman on Success dredge. Three brothers, one at the front and two at school. His father was at present in ill-liealth. and was dependent on him. R rohard Speed, dredge.master of Success dredge, gave evidence of appeallant’s work, which was essential to the work of the dredge. Adjourned sine die. ’lTie industry, said the chairman, may have to come up for review at a later date. This man was keening- his parents. .John Clother. Lake Mnpourika, classed A (Mr Murdoch). —Mr Murdoch, said the man was held up by the floods. —Adjourned till next sitting. John Patrick TTansbury, Ross, classed A (Mr Murdoch); appellant stated he was a mail contractor; was single, 36 years of oge. Two brothers, one at the front and one in Second Division rejected: was looking after his brother’s farm. Had 80 ewes and 25 head of cattle on the farm. Had the railway contract for delivery of goods fromAßoss station to Ross and also the mail contract from Ross to Webeka. Had lost several of bis drivers who had gone '■> the war. Was unable to get a-man to take his place. It was a: difficult road and first-class men were required for
the service. A. E. McGregor, Chief Postmaster at Hokitika, gave evidence That *’ mail service had been carried out satisfactorily by Han-sbury and Haddock. Thgir service was the mam service I ! South YYestland. After some consideration the Cliaiiiniiii said the hearing would stand over until next sitting. The Board considered that it was necessary to have two coach services in the district at j present and suggested an nmalgama- ! tiou.
John Manera, R" ss Classed A. (Mr. Murdoch. TTiLs man had been called under Clause 35 and adjourned nine die. and since had been drawn in tho ballot. .Mr. Murdoch said appellant was held up by the floods. Mrs .Manera, mother, gave evidence —Adjourned, sine die. Neil Henry Nicholson, appeal on bohalf of Henry .Tones, Arahura (Mr. M nrdoch). This case had been adjourned from a previous sitting. Neil Nicholson gave evidence, in sup ; port. Ho had 26 men working at the mill. All the single men except twe bad enlisted and been turned down The- position was worse now than at the previous hearing. Witness war examined at considerable length as u. 1 the. work at the mill and the necessity of Jones’ services being retained. Tho Chairman stated that they wore going to order a fresh modi fa examination and if he passed agaii then at present they saw no reasoi why he should not go—Adjourned fo 1 medical examination, j Thomas Mo.vnihan, Kumara Classw ; a. (Mr! Murdoch).--Appellant said hi father and mother were alive. Ho ha three brothers, ono. about 30 and th ‘ others 15 and 16. His brother was •'> the front. There were six sisters, a single, three being at home. Was. ' gold-miner, working at a sluicing elaii at Kumara, using Government watoi ■ His father, himself, and u man workc the claim. Took nine months to opc up and had been sluicing for thr< months, with payable results. The chairman stated that Moyniha’ would have to go. The claim had Wi taken up only a year ago.
