As a wind-up fo yesterday’s storm, the night was very boisterous, heavy rain falling. To-day the river continued in high flood, while an extremely heavy sea was running. St. Mary’s euchre tournament was well attended last evening. The prizewinners were Mrs Bonisch, Miss K. Murphy, Rev. Father Clancy and G. Howe. After supper had been partaken of a. very enjoyable hour was spent in dancing. The reply of the Minister of Public Works in regard to the Mikonui bridge question will come, as a great disappointment after the expectations which were aroused o n the matter. Tho estimate given reached £B,OOO which is far beyond any previous estimate of the work involved. The estimate of course would be based largely on tho design contemplated. Considering that for the sawmilling project a structure estimated to cost £1,500 is designed it will be seen that there is a very marked difference in the financial aspect. The Sawmilling Company's bridge is to carry locomotive traffic, so it will have to be of ft substantial character. It is still open for the local body to avail itself of the offer to convert the structure proposed into a traffic road bridge, and if this can he financed, the urgency for tho structure for public and traffic would justify action being taken in the matter. The Government for some reason hak not displayed a very friendly disposition towards the work from the outset. Tho present Minister of Public Works is the one responsible for the cancelling t)lo railway Vote for bridging the river. No doubt tho whole question 'will he thrashed out again at the next mooting of the County Council, hut it would he good nows.- to hear that ways and means had been found for bridging tho river with Government assistance or not.
