ADMIRALTY’S GIFT.
NAVAL SLOOP TORCH FOR NEW ZEALAND, Wiai.ixuTOX, Sept 14. The Minister of Marine informed Parliament to-day that, the war sloop Torch, well known in Pacific waters for many years, has been presented to the New Zealand Government and has been renamed Rama, the Maori equivalent; for torch. The question of utilising the vessel had been carefully considered by inspectors of the Marine Department. Their recommendation was that the vessel should be used as a substitute for tbe 'lighthouse steamer Hinemoa, which now had reached an age at which it was desirable she should be laid aside. It would take £ 10,000 to convert the Torch into a suitable condition for lighthouse work. Mr Poole : “ft would be money thrown away. The Ifon G. \V. Russell explained that there- was a vote of ;C 0,000 on the Estimates for providing a substitute for the Hinemoa, and lie pro-, posed to ask the Finance'Minister to transfer it in order to alfect alterations to the Rama.
