Tho Supremo Court sittings at Hokitika commence to-morrow morning before Mr Justice Sim at 11 o’clock. At Grey mouth yesterday Messrs O. W. Moss and Co. sold tho wrecked steamer Opouri at auction for £IOOO, to Captain Munro, Mr. D. Rceco of Christ church, atterwards becoming the purchaser. Tho cargo was sold for £3O to Mr. Reece and two lifeboats and a compass brought £lO. The twelfth annual meeting of the Aralmra Dairy Factory C'ov Ltd. will bo hold at Cbunty Council Chambers, Hokitika on Saturday next 15tli. inst at 0,30. p.m. The business- includes tho reception of the annual report and balance sheet, the ©lection of new directors nnd one auditor, and general. All suppliers and intending suppliers aro specially invited.
At the Magistrate’s Court, Greymouth yesterday, before Messrs J. D. Lynch and W. R. Kettle, J.P’s Joseph Gunn was charged with the theft of a bicycle valued at £4 10s, the property of Frank Sweetman. Accused pleaded guilty. Detective-Sergeant Ward said that the bicycle had been left outside the railway goods shed and had been lifted by accused and sold later to Samuel Hill of Omoto for £l. Accused had made tracks for Reeftou, but was arrested at Stillwater. Accused was under the influence of drink when the theft took place. A fine of £2 was imposed.
The Grey Comity elections to bo held this year, promiso to he eargerly contested. Mr. John Greaney has announced his candidature for the Marsden seat in opositi.on to tho sitting member Mr. J. Finn, while for Hohonu Mr. P. Ryder will bo opposed by Mr. Arthur Robinson. For Red Jacks, there promises to he a fight between Mr. J. McCarthy (the present representative) and Mr. Noel Peat, of Moana. Mr. I). Baybutt will have to fight for the Waipuna seat with Mr. W. Clayton. In tho other ridings no definite announcements have been made save that the retiring members intend to seek reelection.
At the Masterton Police Court on Thursday Band Chong, a Chinese fruiterer was find £2O and costs, in default one month’s imprisonment for keeping liquor for sale in a no-license district. At tho conclusion of the case, on Sergeant Miller remarking that he supposed the bottles of whisky seized at Bang Chong’s shop would bo destroyed as was usual in these cases, Mr. IV. Noble (counsel for defendant) said: “It’s a fjliamo under the circumstances, to destroy the liquor. are charitable institutions and camps in this district where the whisky can bt put into good use. It soems a pity to deliberately waste the liquor and I would ask your ..orsliip to exorcise your power under the Statute and order the liquor to be handed ovor to some institution.” The Magistrate said he had always thought that tho liquor could well b e given to the hospitals. The whisky could be held in tho meantime and he would consider what should be done with it.
