The monthly meeting was held at the County Chambers at 7.30 o clock. Present- Messrs W. Wilson (voted to the chair), A. H. Richards, C. M. Mnlfvoy, P. R. Stewart, T. W Dull G Davidson, W. J. Butler, J. J, Mclntosh, G. Chapman and D. ,1. E vans. , The minutes of the. previous meeting wore read and confirmed. The outward correspondence was approved. JN WAR r» COK I! KSPON PENCE. From Prime Minister, acknowledging letter supporting the passing of the Juries Act Amendment Rill. - Received, From Minister ot Justice, on same subject, stating it was not desirable that the proposals of the Bill should apply to murder cases, while in any case owing to the opposition likely to be offered in the Lower House, the measure should, in his opinion, be postponed. —Received. From Minister of Mines, agreeing to waive condition for deposit of £SOO in respect to claim .at Dillmanstown tailing flat,*if some approved person would stand security for the amount. Received and refened to Mr Murdoch. From Minister for Tourist and Health Resorts, outlining;®wliat had been done to advertise Mount Cook and Westland by means of cinematograph views in Australia, England and Ameixca. —Received. From Industries Committee, Honse of stating enquiry was being made into matters tending to benefit and encourage the industries ot the Dominion, and asking if the Chamber desired to tender any evidence Received, and to reply if. any enquiry wove made on any points the Chamber would endeavour to answer B'ame, From Collector’of Customs, thanking the Chamber for letter of congratulation regarding the low cost of collecting Customs revenue at Hokitika.—Received. From Wataroa Dairy Factory Company, giving comparative return * for past three seasons as follows : - 1014-15—Rutter fat, 39,832 lbs; value, £2,402; cheese, 1 00,765 lbs; value, .£3.872 ; suppliers, 11; herd average £ 5. lOlfi-16 Butter fat, 46,240 lbs; value, £2,607; cheese, 1 18,767 lbs; value, £4,002: suppliers, 11; herd average £l7. 1016-17-Butter fat, 42,270 lbs, value, £2,113; cheese, 107,466 lbs ; value. £4,200; suppliers, 12; herd average £2O.
—Received with thanks, and resolved to ask other companies- to supply similar returns for embodiment in the annual ’ report of the Chamber. Members spoke appreciatively of the excellent financial return obtained. From Westland A. & P. Association, asking support to objection lodged with the Land Board against the grantiug of the application for a lime area near Ross to the proposed company, on the ground that the output should he controlled publicly for the benefit of the fanning community. —Received and resolved to .reply that the Chamber had asked the Board already to safeguard public interests by restricting the area to he granted with the object of preventing any unreasonable monopoly. From Postal Department, suggesting the superscription of duplicate letters by post by different routes for oversea countries. —Received. From Associated Chamber of Commerce, circulars in respect to taxation. and the proposed incidence on joint stock companies.—Received with thanks.
From Rcvd .las. Milne, Thames, forwarding the copy of a pamphlet toy Sir Thomas Whittaker M.P., England, supporting the Stale Control and purchase of the drink Traffic. —Received.
Circulars and periodicals from England were received. An account for 15/' was passed for payment. It was reported the financial year closed this month, and the annual meeting would be held on the first Tuesday in November. Mr P. It. Stewart was appointed Hon Auditor. Mr Evans reported in regatd to the electrification of Otira tunnel, and the result of an interview with the Hon Minister of Public Works, which was considered very satisfactory. A vote of thanks was passed to the deputation for its services and interest in the matter.
Mr W. J Butler reported in regard fo the deputation which waited on tho Minister of Lands respecting the proposed experimental-farm for Westland. - Received with thanks to the deputation.
It was mentioned that a motor service between Jackson and Hoki tika woukl open next week connecting with the Otira express carrying the East Coast and North Island mail. It was resolved to urge the Postal Department to offer a subsidy for the cai’ringe of the Westland mails, and so ensure local delivery several hours earlier.
It was also resolved to again write’ the Department in respect to the installation of the metallic circuit, and tho installation of a ferry telephone at the Little Wanganui river. The meeting rose at U p.m.
